Happy Monday to those who celebrate!
Lately, I’ve had an increase in Subs, so I want to do a quick intro:
My name is Phil Butehorn. I am a comic writer from New York. Since 2019, I've been involved in 20 + published anthologies. Here are a few books I've had stories in: Modern Mythology Vol 1 and 2, Nightmare Theater Vol 1, Vol 2 and Vol 3, Cthulhu Invades Vol 2, Vol 3, Vol 4, and Monster Mash-Up Vol 2.
My mission here is to support new creators and share my success and failures as a creator, and the process behind my stories. Thanks for joining me on this ride!
Dear Up and Coming Comic Writer
One of my favorite tips to share is reminding creators not to compare their success to other writers in their writing class.
WAIT!
Before I explain why not to compare your career to other creators publishing alongside you, I have a confession. I am a hypocrite! Yep, that’s right…
A few weeks ago, I found myself being pretty, pretty, pretty jealous. This particular creator was talking about having exclusive rights with a publisher and then the following week the creator shared their story was being optioned. I found myself:
I quickly realized I was an idiot. I should have been celebrating this creator’s success. Instead, I was thinking “I never get opportunities.”
Time-out!!!
I get plenty of opportunities. Where’s the gap? The answer is simple: I’m not doing enough to move on from anthologies. I should have been doing Kickstarters for some time now. What gets in my way? Fear. This is something I’m working on.
I preach “finishing a story” and I’ve done that plenty of times for anthologies. However, I haven’t done it for a story larger than a comic short. That changes in 2025!
A few months ago, I finished the script for issue #1 of Final Boy: College Laundry. I have an artist assigned to the story, but no timeline for when the book will go to Kickstarter.
As of this weekend, I’m two pages away from finishing my one-shot, Dead Laughter.
As of last night, I completed a puke outline for Project Bad Karma. I have 3 issues outlined and I’m 10 pages into a puke draft script for Issue #1.
